Home Networking Issue, can't see other computer!!?

Alright, so I've done as people have told me, and I've got both computers ready for networking. I've run the network wizard on the computer with XP, but on the computer with windows 2k there isn't one, but I've worked around that. I've put in all the required information, but the computers still aren't recognizing eachother. I'm using a D-link DI-604. One of my computers has XP and the other just had windows 2K. The computer with XP is a HP Compaq and the stupid thing didn't come with a floppy drive, so I can't create a back-up of the wizard files. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Open the network properties on 2k and add file and print sharing, make sure it has the same workgroup name as XP, you will then see a sharing tab when you right click your folders. Whatever you want to share must be set to share.
Reply:Go to Start -%26gt; Run and type in CMD. This should drop you to a command prompt. On each computer type ipconfig at the command prompt. It should provide an ip address of both computers. Typically the first 3 octets (i.e. the first three sets of numbers) from each machine should match. From machine A type 'ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' substituting the ip address from machine B. If you receive a successful reply. You have connectivity and the problem is related to the sharing of files between the two machines. If there is no reply or the IP addresses are completely different your machines are somehow on different networks. Good luck!
Reply:first thing to do is to check and make sure you have a link light on both pc's. If so, then confirm you have an ip address. (go to run, type cmd, then type ipconfig) if the network card is working you will have an ip. If the ip starts with 169, your machine knows there is a network, but can not get an ip. from your router. next make sure that the workgroup name you created is the same on both machines.

If both machines are running, you should see the other, but unless you turn on sharing you wont be able to access anything from the other pc.
Reply:With in your router make sure that dhcp is enable. Check both machines and see if they share the same network id name like workgroups or mshome etc. If not change. Under your local area connection right click and select properties. Double Click Internet Protocol and select Obtain an IP address automatically. Turn both computers off and turn on again. Your problem should be solved.

Make sure file and print sharing is installed.
Reply:did you check your firewall setting ? it needs to allow printer and file sharing.
Reply:Hello,

I seen all the answers put by others, so i think i don't have to say the same thing but still i will have to say some of things which other have said like

As you mentioned you have configured ip address on each computer did you tried to ping each other

ex type the command ping from command prompt

ping ipaddress of other machine

if you are not getting replay check that firewall in your xp computer is enabled or not
