Networking problem!!!!!!!!!.................

I have a Dell Laptp and a PC in networking via LAN wire. The problem is that the laptop is able to access the files in the other PC but the PC cannot. I have internet sharing working properly and printer sharing working properly. I have asked many people, they all say this is a problem of settings (perhaps IP address). What IP addresses should I enter in both the computers and other settings if necessary (Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS Server etc....). Please help and give a step by step procedure. Thanks in advance.

Make sure you have the same ip address range and subnet mask on both laptop and desktop, eg 196.168.1.1, 255.255.255.0 (ip address seem to be fine if you lapto can see files on desktop.

Revisit sharing on the laptop, chances are that the sharing on the laptop is not properly set. Test by exploring network places from the desktop and see if you can see laptop from the list, if not, check the sharing.

It coud be something wrong with your Dell network adapter, visit www.dell.com and download the drivers (there was a problem with dell network adapter drivers). Reinstal the drivers, it should solve the problem.
Reply:Try disabling your firewall on the laptop.
Reply:While I know that the IP address can be a problem, your problem sounds more like a sharing issue. You have to create at least one share on each machine for the other machine to access it. If the IP address is the problem, use 192.168.2.100 and 192.168.2.101.
Reply:just enable the guest account with same passwords on both systems
