Networking Xbox and Computer for Xbox Live?

Hey I am just wondering, I have Xbox Live with the normal Xbox and I have it hooked up to the computer via an Ethernet-USB adapter. I was wondering what steps do I need to take for networking between the computer and my Xbox so I can use Live, I think it's called Internet Connection Sharing. Thanks in advance.

Networking Xbox and Computer for Xbox Live?
Okay, I have an Xbox 360 and use my wireless laptop to get on Live. With Windows XP, what I do is:

Plug in the Ethernet (I don't use the USB deal, so I'm not sure if it works the same way...)

But with them plugged into both units, I start them both up.

Then go to Start --%26gt; Connect to--%26gt; Show All Connections

I highlight both my Internet Connection and the LAN connection from which my Xbox is plugged into...which might be a little different from yours with USB. (I'm guessing they should both show up though? )

With both connections highlighted, I right-click and go to Bridge Connections.

This will then bridge them, and it *might* work after that.

(Sometimes it's weird for me and I have to delete the network bridge connection and then Properties on my internet connection and under the advanced tab click on Allow Other Users to Connect. This is because my computer has a mind of it's own, haha.)

I have my email under my name, and if nothing works and someone else can't help, then go ahead and email me. I wish I had someone to help me when I was trying to figure it out... Ha, well, hope it helps...really! Okay, Good luck.

Reply:Goto lcc-win32 site and download the lcc compiler. It is a C only compiler with a cool IDE. This is the ultimate free compiler in C. I has matured over 20 years in the best universities for computer science in America. It is now maintained by a commercial company. It comes with a superb tutorial in network programming in C. Guess what? It implements C99 completely! It comes in with the best libraries for network programming prepacked. The BEST part is the documentation. You must try it out once. Another option id to use gcc on Linux. But it has a higher learning curve.

how will i start my wired networking? help me pls im just a beginner.

Networking Computer using window xp sp2?
You want em to be on lan only?

or do you want em to connect to internet also?
Reply:Easiest way is to get a router/modem where you can connect to the internet as well as setup a home network. Most devices are wired for 4 Pcs, so the other 4 can use wireless for connection. Are you up for Broadband? A router/modem with ADSL2 connection will be easy to setup as it works straight out of the box. Go to start then network %26amp; internet connections. Select the wizard "set up wireless network for a home or small office". Follow the prompts.
Reply:if you want to connect them to the internet its very simple just hookup the wires if yu wanna make a sharing fiolder and stuff yu go to my networks setup a home or small business network it iwll ask you some questions and yu pick the most which applies to you and then at the end you put your flash drive to the computer and pick make a network disk and then you go and apply it to teh other computers by running the network setup remember to enable the folder and prnter sharing when you make the network

NETWORKING MYSTERY --please help !!!!!?

i have comcast cable service---i have a emta--a dual modem for phone and internet--it is made by arris---- when i plug the modem into the back of my computer via ethernet cable the internet works good and is fast. when i plug it into my router the wireless signal works great for 2 minutes then the connection dissapears--- i then take out the ethernet cable and plug it into the computer and the internet works great-- i have talked with belkin router company techs and they cannot figure it out either--- i also have another router that is made by d-link and it does the same thing--- does anyone know if the emta modem/phone by arris is not compatible with wireless g rated routers-- or any thoughts on what it could be?? i have done all the usual reset attempts and other stuff with techs on the phone but it just lasts 2 minutes of wireless connectivity then it is gone---help solve this mystery and you are the king of networking !!

NETWORKING MYSTERY --please help !!!!!?
Go into the wireless settings on the router and clone the computer's MAC address. Comcast may be rejecting your computer, thinking it's a rogue on the network.
Reply:try on this..............
Reply:it depends on the distance from the router

it depends on what electronic gadgets are around you.

gadgets like owen etc etc

go to manufacturers website and do a bios update and then do a wireless driver update

check with reseat of the wireless card.

also check if the wireless light keeps swiching between blue and amber
Reply:get another ISP this sounds terrible =(
Reply:that certainly sounds like a low level communication error

sounds like there is a negotiation process and total disagreement between the devices

it's possible that the comcast device either changes the frames on the wire in a propietary manner that makes these routers not

communicable with the types of devices people use to extend their ISP service to a home network ..

if ur router has the option to copy the mac address of your pc that may also help ur cable company may be looking for the mac address of ur pc to always be connecting not the mac of ur router

Networking Vista Starter And XP?

I have a switch or a hub I have it connected to my 2 laptps and 1 comp. I have used the home networking and it works fine for my computer and laptop and file sharing works but my second laptop is vista starter I cant send files or share then from my xp computer to this vista . However the internet works fine on this vista laptop

I can access the other computers from this vista laptop but not from my Windows XP Machines

Networking Vista Starter And XP?
Find the IP addresses of the computers

Start --%26gt;Run (or holod windows key and press "R")

cmd

ipconfig /all

Write down the IP address of the Vista computer

In XP, Run the Network Setup Wizard

Start--%26gt;Programs--%26gt;Acessories--%26gt;COmuni... Setup Wizard

In the Wizard, Enable File and Printer Sharing and give the XP computer a name and change the WOrkgroup to "Workgroup" (the default Vista Workgroup).

Now open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and in the address bar type "\\{IP address of Vista Computer}"

ie

\\192.168.1.100

The SMB shares on Vista should Appear if File Sharing was enabled on Vista.

You can Mount the Network Drive to the OS root. In Windows Explorer, Tools--%26gt;Map Network Drive

Assign a drive letter

under address - type

\\{IP address of Vista}\{shared folder name}

ie

\\192.168.1.100\SharedDocs

Check Reconnect at Logon and Click OK - the shared folder name is important or it won't work. Enter username and password.

You can assign Static DHCP if your router supports it or plain Static IP addresses In Vista and XP, because DHCP IP addresses can change depending on which computer is on at the time. If Static IP, be sure to enter in the Gateway IP and DNS server IP or you won't get internet. The IP for Both fields should be the LAN IP of your router.

Do the same thing in Vista to access the XP shares (make note of the XP IP address)

Networking sites for NGO Jobs?

I am wondering if anyone knows of a good Networking site for NGO jobs. Also, a good directory of organizations. I am interested in South East Asia and South America.

Thanks.

Networking sites for NGO Jobs?
I'm confused by your question. You mean a web site that lists NGO jobs, or, a web site where people that work in NGOs go online to talk about their work?

There are jobs for international NGOs posted to sites like

http://www.developmentex.com/

http://www.reliefweb.int/ (click on "vacancies)

http://www.dev-zone.org/

Small NGOs in South East Asia and South America recruit through their own local media and networks. So, for South America, you would need to speak Spanish or Portuguese, at least; small NGOs prefer people who also speak local tribal languages. For South East Asia, local NGOs also prefer people who speak the local language, or at least French (for Vietnam).

Use Google to find online fora focused on NGOs in the areas you are interested. For instance, type in

NGOs Cambodia

into www.google.com and you get:

The NGO Forum on Cambodia is a membership organisation for local and international non govern- mental organisations (NGOs) working in Cambodia.

How to home networking computers with only a dial-in modem?

I know how wireless network work with cable and DSL. I am still keen on keeping my dial-in connection while networking all our computers (4) and printers (2) so that files and printers can be shared from different computers in the different rooms. The wireless routers and adapters seemed to serve cable/DSL connections. Any ideas how mine would work?

There is nothing that says you can not network at home without a broadband internet connection. Just buy the router and Nics that you require and away you go! Just do not connect anything to the WAN port of the router.

Networking etiquette?

Wanted to see what you think I should do in this situation:

I met someone at a conference and through this person (P1) got connected to another person (P2). When P1 emailed us both to make the connection, P2 replied quite immediately with such enthusiasm to help, giving me the impression that she wants to help. I took a week to think of my reply and wrote to her. I followed up with another email but have not heard back. Wanted to see if I should:

1. write another email to P2

2. write to P1 to see if P2 is ok or if I offend her in any way (which I'm certain I didn't but who knows, people are strange sometimes)

3. forget the whole thing (even though it is a very good networking lead).

I appreciate your suggestion...thanks!

Networking security?

Can anyone tell me what networking security is and go into detail and how it can be obtained?

Networking security?
Network security involves practices that reduce the risk of having information get into the wrong hands or preventing unwanted programs or individuals from distrupting your quality of service. This can be achieved in three ways

- Physical Security

- Application Security

- Hardware Security.

Physical trying to limit physical access to a computer or networking devices. This can be done by housing critical devices in areas that few people have knowledge, requires keys, or smart card access.

Hardware security reflects on networking devices such as routers and firewalls that have builtin virus scanners or access rules. Access rules are a defined list of both allowed and not allowed activities or programs. Similar to a bouncer at a bar, they inspect everything that goes in or out. Some also act as honey pot which pretends to be computer or server and will act as a scout that will alarm the adminstrator of possible threats. Some devices are advanced enough to offer hardware based encryption or reroute traffic when a threat is found.

Application Security mostly deals with access permissions or group policies, encryption and programs located on a computer or server. Firewalls , antispam, spyware or virus scanners are the common tools that will be found at this level. Along with having a physical firewall scanners and encryption, application based solutions are needed because one level miss a threat. For example if a threat originates from within a network, considerable damage could of occured before its isolation with out the additional application layer.

Group policies and access permissions are in some ways similar to a firewall. Not only do they have a list of which activities or programs are permitted, but depending on restrictions, they can deny access to files or certain tasks on a computer such as changing the system date or installing software. Finally, a true secure network environment is totally isolated meaning no network connection or physical access that simple. But that's not practical so have these three layers is must.
Reply:With respect to the details, you can google and do your own research. But generally, most of us want to keep out networks secure so no one else can use our bandwidth or otherwise get into our networks.

To secure your own network, read the users manual that came with your router, then call the manufacturer of your router and chances are they have some shortcuts for you. At least the great Cisco folks at Linksys do.

Good Luck

Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter?

Does anyone know where I could get a used wireless networking adapter for cheap? Also, do you have to use the one made by Microsoft? Can you get a different… cheaper wireless networking adapter that would work for the 360?

Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter?
im not sure but microsoft probably wants you to only buy their brand of stuff but you can check ebay, i bought the microsoft one thats 100$ thats to much for one when a wireless controller only costs 40$
Reply:I would only recommend using the wireless networking adapter that was made by Mircrosoft. I had a friend who purchased a cheap one that was a different brand, plugged it in, and it shorted out his 360. They would not cover it under warranty because third party hardware caused the short. If he would have used the one made by Microsoft, it would have been covered under warranty!
Reply:And how would microsoft know it was another adapter that blew the 360, what a load of crap. The answer is NO, you don't have to use the microsoft one. It's another way for them to rip us off.

You can use any wireless gaming adapter made by belkin, linksys netgear. You want a wireless G type.

I have a 360 and use a belkin F5d7330 wireless gaming adapter. It cost me £25 off ebay although I been telling loads of people on here which mean everyone will be looking and pushing the price up. It took a little time to configure but it works very well with no lag. My router (Netgear) isn't on microsoftst recommended list either.

If you buy a gaming adapter and need a hand to configure it (No different to a router) drop me an email. From what I understand the microsoft adapter isn't just plug and play either.

Networking for Poets?

I'm looking for a good group/forum for networking and trading criticism with other poets. Any good suggestions?

Networking for Poets?
Http://www.myspace.com/ Perphaps. Search poets under groups.
Reply:Hi, gleamchaser. My name is Hank. I want to warn you up front--poetry is an addiction. I started writing in 1977, and have not been able to pen the World's greatest novel because of it. Just kidding, not about the novel though.

Why don't you start a group/forum for the networking, criticism and communication with other poets?

I would join. I'm a serious about my writing, but I am absolutely the dumbest person in the world when it comes to computers. I'm surprised my p.c. doesn't explode every time my fingers start waltzing over its keys.

I currently have a Yahoo 360 page, and that's where I post my poetry. I use the blog that's available for the customers of Yahoo. I think it is an invaluable gift, but I don't know if it's the best medium.

If you are computer-savvy, maybe you could help us who aren't as literate as you. I've been waiting for someone to begin a forum or group like this.

Every time I try to do something like this--I get almost to the end in the start-up and clumsily touch a wrong key, or don't blink my eyes to please or cross my toes right... Something happens to what I have managed to accomplish so far and off my work goes to be eaten by the program monsters lurking hereabout, never to be seen again. Alas.

I love to write. I love the act of creating something from just twenty-six letters and my imagination. I think that's what God invented poets for. Do you have i.m.? I do, but I really don't know how I got it. One day I was checking stuff out, when this new communication medium magically made itself known to me.

So, gleamchaser, if you would be so kind as to check my 360 page out, you might be able to sense how serious I am about writing. You can reach me at elmoqjonze@sbcglobal.net. I try to answer all emails I get. It's a curse I was taught in school.

I must warn you again--some people call me the english nazi, intentional small e. Is that an oxymoron? Or, is that a moron without the oxy? So... I probably make more mistakes than I care to admit, but I don't mind admitting my mistakes--God, blessed me with plenty of talent in that particular area.

Will a social networking site devoted to Malaysia/Southeast asia be popular and profitable?

Evaluate whether a social networking site devoted to Malaysians or the countries of South East Asia will be popular and profitable, or if you think one already exist, the existence of such a popular social networking sites in Malaysia. Provide your reasons or supporting information.

Will a social networking site devoted to Malaysia/Southeast asia be popular and profitable?
yes

this is because asia too is beginning to be in the forefront in technology and etc. and due to increasing globalism, social networking is important b/c people value the computer, cellphones, blogs / pages as a way to connect and keep in touch.

Therefore, with an introduction of sovial networking- it would be very profitable because people will be enthusiastic to use it.

However, there needs to be enough people with access to computers, and internet..

The question is broad and there can be many answers to this problem. I suggest the website http://www.ittoolbox.com/

This website is a community of people in the networking and IT field. You are more likely to find your answers there. Anti virus protects against viruses and by scanning. Norton anti-virus only works if updated regularly (although it is reactive not proactive) By network blocking I am guessing that you are talking about access denial. This could be do to a firewall issue, or other problems with access list. Hope this helps

Networking etiquette- what to do?

Met this person, thought maybe we could help each other build business, problem is.....this person keeps trying to sell me the thing they do, and i am a;ready covered in that area with a much better rate. I don;t mind referring the person and giving name out but how do i polietly decline the "thing" he is selling but still maintain a networking relationship?

Networking etiquette- what to do?
You got it right the first time. Just tell them you're already covered with their service but will be glad to refer them to others. They benefit and it shouldn't sour the relationship. Your good referral could generate a lot more business for them than they might get by just doing business with yiou. If they don't see that, you are better off without them.

I just realized that "networking" means that a entire committee gets access to your personal life - - through the opinion of the person that they are "networking" with. Then astonishingly the committee members, feeling justified to this privy, openly make comments to you about YOUR life (through the eyes of the person they are "networking" with) as if they have actually had a personal conversation with you before about it...

Is this the way of the world?

What is the value of networking?
Networking is the best way of marketing yourself but it does not mean that your personal information can be accessed unless you let it be known.

Networking is basically the flow of either information or products from one source to another, it can be a very powerful tool but like all powerful tools it should be used with care, never give out personal information that you want to be kept private.

If you stop and think about it you have been networking all your life, but you call your closest network - family and friends.

Networking is the way of the world and in fact has the ability to bring people closer together.
Reply:Yes, it is pretty much the way of the world. You want to be out there because you never know what you will find out there.

There are diamonds are hidden but they are diamonds none the less!

I would suggest that you protect yourself and your information. I don't really know of any networking committees, especially a bunch of people being privy to your personal information, so be careful!

Good luck to you! :-D

Networking problem!!!!!!!!!.................

I have a Dell Laptp and a PC in networking via LAN wire. The problem is that the laptop is able to access the files in the other PC but the PC cannot. I have internet sharing working properly and printer sharing working properly. I have asked many people, they all say this is a problem of settings (perhaps IP address). What IP addresses should I enter in both the computers and other settings if necessary (Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS Server etc....). Please help and give a step by step procedure. Thanks in advance.

Networking problem!!!!!!!!!.................
Make sure you have the same ip address range and subnet mask on both laptop and desktop, eg 196.168.1.1, 255.255.255.0 (ip address seem to be fine if you lapto can see files on desktop.

Revisit sharing on the laptop, chances are that the sharing on the laptop is not properly set. Test by exploring network places from the desktop and see if you can see laptop from the list, if not, check the sharing.

It coud be something wrong with your Dell network adapter, visit www.dell.com and download the drivers (there was a problem with dell network adapter drivers). Reinstal the drivers, it should solve the problem.
Reply:Try disabling your firewall on the laptop.
Reply:While I know that the IP address can be a problem, your problem sounds more like a sharing issue. You have to create at least one share on each machine for the other machine to access it. If the IP address is the problem, use 192.168.2.100 and 192.168.2.101.
Reply:just enable the guest account with same passwords on both systems

Networking for iBook Clamshell?

I was wondering if it was possible for the iBook Clamshell Model number: m7426 to have wireless networking on it? If so what do you need?

Networking for iBook Clamshell?
You can install the origional Airport Card. It goes under the keyboard.
Reply:Hello Blue Phoenix,

I'm not sure how old your iBook is. I wasn't able to find any technical specs on the Internet. Does it have an Airport card, or can you install an Airport card inside of your iBook? It might be so old that it's incapable of getting one put in. I'm sorry.

What's the best social networking program/site, that allows someone to build a network like Myspace?

I would like to know how Tom runs myspace.

I think I would like to know how, and start one of my own.

I tried a lot search engines to search for Build Social Networking.

I tried some sites, like Ning, Kickapps, goingon, and elgg.

Which one or any social networking sites will look like Myspace, and act like myspace?

What's the best social networking program/site, that allows someone to build a network like Myspace?
social networking is a huge growing field. If you want to understand the ins/outs you probably need to talk to some web developers. There are a ton of social networking websites out there these days.

Networking Solution through ADSL? Again with Updates?

Hello Everyone.

This is Imtiyaz Again

I had asked a question on Networking before. I received several answers for that but I forgot to tell that I would not like to setup a VPN for this. I want a solution without a VPN. Check Below. If anybody can, please give me a solution for this plan.

I have to link 5 of my branches through ADSL Connections and want to synchronise the SQL Server Database that I have installed on all 5 branches.

All 5 branches should synchronise with each other the SQL Server Database is the final objective.

How can this be done? Can I do it without a Static IP Address to my ADSL or should I get Static IP Addresses for all the 5 Branches?

But I want to link the branches without any Static IP Address. Is this possible? If there are any software to do this, you can even comment on that as well.

Anyway, with or without any Static IP Address, I want to connect all 5 branches.

BYE

Networking Solution through ADSL? Again with Updates?
no all five branches should be able to see your SQL server

to do that you should install mini router like span net 2500

so everybody should be able to see that

in order to understand this

branches has to go to LIKE T1 LINE and a mini router with

dedicated ip address and SQL should be able to see all those

routers then the traffic should be able to go

buy 5 router got a T1 line to all the branches assign ip to all

get back to SQL configure to receive and send through these ip

hope i have helped
Reply:Hi,

please can you specify if all the PCs in the same location or not?

and if not the 5 of them in the same location and the server is away?

Networking basics,topologies?
basic terminolgies

Network - A network is a group of computers connected together in a way that allows information to be exchanged between the computers.

Node - A node is anything that is connected to the network. While a node is typically a computer, it can also be something like a printer or CD-ROM tower.

Segment - A segment is any portion of a network that is separated, by a switch, bridge or router, from other parts of the network.

Backbone - The backbone is the main cabling of a network that all of the segments connect to. Typically, the backbone is capable of carrying more information than the individual segments. For example, each segment may have a transfer rate of 10 Mbps (megabits per second), while the backbone may operate at 100 Mbps.

Topology - Topology is the way that each node is physically connected to the network (more on this in the next section).

Local Area Network (LAN) - A LAN is a network of computers that are in the same general physical location, usually within a building or a campus. If the computers are far apart (such as across town or in different cities), then a Wide Area Network (WAN) is typically used.

Network Interface Card (NIC) - Every computer (and most other devices) is connected to a network through an NIC. In most desktop computers, this is an Ethernet card (normally 10 or 100 Mbps) that is plugged into a slot on the computer's motherboard.

Media Access Control (MAC) address - This is the physical address of any device -- such as the NIC in a computer -- on the network. The MAC address, which is made up of two equal parts, is 6 bytes long. The first 3 bytes identify the company that made the NIC. The second 3 bytes are the serial number of the NIC itself.

Unicast - A unicast is a transmission from one node addressed specifically to another node.

Multicast - In a multicast, a node sends a packet addressed to a special group address. Devices that are interested in this group register to receive packets addressed to the group. An example might be a Cisco router sending out an update to all of the other Cisco routers.

Broadcast - In a broadcast, a node sends out a packet that is intended

topologies

• Bus - Each node is daisy-chained (connected one right after the other) along the same backbone, similar to Christmas lights. Information sent from a node travels along the backbone until it reaches its destination node. Each end of a bus network must be terminated with a resistor to keep the signal that is sent by a node across the network from bouncing back when it reaches the end of the cable.

• Ring - Like a bus network, rings have the nodes daisy-chained. The difference is that the end of the network comes back around to the first node, creating a complete circuit. In a ring network, each node takes a turn sending and receiving information through the use of a token. The token, along with any data, is sent from the first node to the second node, which extracts the data addressed to it and adds any data it wishes to send. Then, the second node passes the token and data to the third node, and so on until it comes back around to the first node again. Only the node with the token is allowed to send data. All other nodes must wait for the token to come to them.

• Star - In a star network, each node is connected to a central device called a hub. The hub takes a signal that comes from any node and passes it along to all the other nodes in the network. A hub does not perform any type of filtering or routing of the data. It is simply a junction that joins all the different nodes together.

• Star bus - Probably the most common network topology in use today, star bus combines elements of the star and bus topologies to create a versatile network environment. Nodes in particular areas are connected to hubs (creating stars), and the hubs are connected together along the network backbone (like a bus network). Quite often, stars are nested within stars, as seen in the example below:

Should i use windows xp networking wizard to setup new wireless network ? Is there a better way?

I am using Linksys router/usb adaptors. I have yet to install hardware yet. When i do will the setup disk allow me to setup the network or would i be better off using the windows xp networking wizard??

Should i use windows xp networking wizard to setup new wireless network ? Is there a better way?
Just use the setup wizard on the router... much easier.....
Reply:just use windows xp wizard, its good in that area. every windows xp should come with windows installer.
Reply:it is better to use the set up disk. I doubt the windows xp networking wizard will be able ot do it as efficiently as the disk that come with the linksys router.
Reply:If you aren't sure of what to do I would use the linksys cd it will run you through everything that you need to do for setting up the networking.
Reply:I always use the XP zero config service as it seems more comprehensive than most applications given away with these things, however you may find that the wireless card/dongle needs to use the application supplied with it as happened to me a few weeks ago with a Belkin dongle. My advice is thus if you know what your doing then use the XP one if this doesnt work then try the Linksys one, if your not sure what your doing then start with the linksys one.

Does any 1 know about networking problem?

I want to ask that two PCs are connected with network. A folder is on sharing contains 4 files. I make changes in file 1 of folder from PC1, copy this file and past it at PC2 through networking. Is this method is best or I should delete that file from PC2 shared folder and then paste the latest updated file from PC1 to PC2 through networking? Please inform me clearly about it.

Does any 1 know about networking problem?
If PC2 needs to have the file then why not map a drive from PC1 to the shared folder on PC2 and edit it from the mapped drive. Just becareful and make a copy before you edit it.
Reply:If you have the sharing set up so that you or other users can make changes to the files then you can open and edit a file on pc1 and then copy and paste the changed file to pc2. However it can get confusing and you will have difficulty remembering which file is the most up to date file. What I have done on my network is have a folder called "work" where I place all the files that I am working on and then on the other computers on my network I have "Save" folders shared. So no matter what computer I'm working on the most up to date versions are in the work folder and items in the save folder are either back ups or older versions. Of course the "work" folder is on my main computer because saving across a network can be slow.
Reply:A folder is already shared? Then why don't you keep the file there so that you can dispense with copying the updated file?

Unless you knew about that but the program wasn't well written to run across networks, then mount the shared folder as a local device; UNIX/Linux could've done this from the get-go and Windows is catching up on this with mountable subdirectories starting Win 2000. Windows can mount in a drive letter level starting long time ago.

Networking with WindowsXP pro and Linux Ubuntu.?

I just installed Linux Ubuntu on a desktop computer. I also have 3 wireless laptops( one of which is full of my music, and all run WinXP Pro) I was wondering whether or not there are some advantages of running both linux and WinXP pro when it comes to home networking. Couple questions i have is whether or not i can use roaming profiles? Is it possible for me to use the linux box as a server for all of my music and files? If these things are possible please explain how i can set them up. And if there are other things i can do i would also like to hear about them too.

Networking with WindowsXP pro and Linux Ubuntu.?
Yes - It's called SAMBA

SAMBA is a program that allows a Linux machine to act as a server to Windows machines. As far as the Windows machines are concerned, the are talking to a windows files server and depending how you set up permissions and accounts, you can set up just about any combination of private, shared, or read only folders you want.

SAMBA also allows you to set up your Linux machine as a print server and turn printers connected to your Linux machine as network printers.

Can anybody help? thanks

I have a networking problem. Have been successfully networking for months now and all of a sudden cant?
You have some virus that is messing with your networking. You restore the system and it resets the network connection, but doesn't really fix the problem. System restore seldom really works and even when it does you can do it by hand faster. System restore also will restore a virus.

Scan for free http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Run your virus scan ( http://free.grissoft.com if you don't have one )

Scan with AdAware and SpyBOT - free- www.download.com has both.

You might need to rebuild the TCP stack and completly reset the networking after you get rid of whatever is causing the problem this tool does it all for you, just one restart. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfi...

Good luck.
Reply:reset the entire system..and reset ips..
Reply:re install ur modem drivers from disc
Reply:Try connecting directly to the internet via the modem. If you can, then the trouble is with the network. If you are using a wireless system then you have to reset and reload all the values for the wireless modem/router. If you are using a wired system try repairing the connection via the windows section on "view all network connection" Don't do a restore as your problem is not there. Good luck.

Networking sites and job applications?

Do you know anyone who has searched on a networking site such as myspace or Facebook after having received a job application from someone?

Do you think it would be ethical to use this information to judge their character?

I just wondered if anyone had experienced this either as an employer or applicant?

Networking sites and job applications?
CV checking companies include Facebook and Myspace searches in the work they do for companies in vetting candidates. There have been incidences of individuals losing their jobs after it's been revealed via Facebook that instead of being ill they were actually partying.

Networking or Software Development. Which has worldwide career prospects?

I’ve got a BE degree in Electronics with around 10 years’ experience as a free-lance computer consultant for charitable organizations. I have adequate knowledge in hardware as well as programming (VB, ASP, C) but have not worked in the IT sector as an employee. I now wish to take up a career that would take me to different parts of the world. Which route should I take? A MCSE/CISCO certification to get into networking or a .Net certification to get into the software industry. Which has wider career prospects, especially in the US and Europe? Thanks for your valuable suggestions and your time.

Networking or Software Development. Which has worldwide career prospects?
This is a tough question becuase it is general, however, I think that I have an answer for you.

All companies need Networking people, however, most of these people are usually confined to one location. Sure they may go out to a new location to do a setup, but then they are back to their "base location" from which they work. Most of these people are direct-hires and work for a company as a career move.

On the other hand, applicaiton developers are both hired as direct-hires (employees) and also contract workers. Since you have some experience in working as a contract (free-lance) person, you might want to go this route. Since you want to travel, you could look for contract work that is 1. in a new location or a place you want to go, but 2. of a higher level of importance (more responsiblity, higher pay, etc).

Say a company wants to take their account software and put it on the web. This project is expected to take 8 months and is in Boston. Next you find a "lead" position on a team that is working in Spain, etc.

I would check out http://www.roberthalftechnology.com/port...

and look what people are seeking in canidates. See how your credentials stack up and what you need to improve on (new skills you need to learn). I have never really looked for such a position as you (where travel is high on the list) so you may find differently. But a free-lance person is a great opportunity if you are into it, becuase you can make a lot as a short-term freelancer.

Also - if you have any interest in management, you might also want to check out PMI (www.pmi.org) and look into trying to earn the PMP. You will need experience in this area (which I am sure you can get in the next few years). PMP's are in demand (high demand) and they generally work mid and long-term projects, which could be temporary, allowing you to travel from one job to the next.

Search job sites for PMP and SDLC (software development life cycle) as you could one day (say 5 years from now) lead a team of programmers on a 6-12 month project in one location, then find yourself another job for 6-18 months in another place. Once you get into that world, people will come find you to run their projects, because they want someone that has experience and can not only get the scope of the project done, but get it done on time and within budget, the three keys of project management.

Anyways. Hope this helps!!!

Hurdles when networking Macs with Windows?

We are a predominately PC office, with hundreds of Windiws 2000 machines and maybe a dozen or more XP stations. One piece of software does not work on Windows, but other institutions have no problem with the Mac version. Our IT staff refuses to support the Apple platform in any way. Regardless of their opipions, we need this software to function. What problems are there exactly when networking a Mac into a Windows based system? I have done it before on lower end networks, but not with this many total machines. As far as I can tell is the Mac would only really need to be a "file-server" for less than a dozen other machines.

Hurdles when networking Macs with Windows?
They can coexists. If one mac can coexist with two pc, it can coexist with many.

Mac is Unix based OS. You can put that mac with samba protocol if you want to see pc files from mac. If you want to share files from your mac to the other machines, you can put an ftp server. That's all.

In our company, we have a large scale network with both, linux, pc and mac. Some experts work with images and other media in their macs and share their work by uploading it to a common drive. Some times you can access them directly by FTP or Samba..

Hope this helps. And it is very common to have hybrid networks.-

Carrier/job networking?

I have heard a lot on carrier/job networking. I come from a minority community and find it difficult to keep direct networking with people of my country. People of my country prefer maintaing rappo within their communities only. How can I find mentors over internet with whom I can confide and take advise?

Carrier/job networking?
Hi,

You can check out http://careerguide.careerdirection.info for some useful info and tips. Good luck!
Reply:To begin with what country are you from? What type of advice are you seeking? Financial?, Legal? Marketing? etc. Furnish more information and I am sure someone will jump in and try to help.
Reply:That is a pretty broad question. What type of mentoring are you looking for? Are you looking for someone who can tell you the best place to set up a medical practice, or which McDonald's in your area pays best?

There are several places you can go on the net for career advice. I can't recommend one without knowing the path you want to take.

What is end-user data along with networking headers and trailers transmitted through a network?

A question on an exam I already took goes "This term refers to end-user data along with networking headers and trailers that is transmitted through a network." It is either a packet or a frame I believe frame would be the appropriate term because a packet is transmitted through networks and internetworks and had no trailer, only headers, but in my networking class they are saying packet? Please help me make sense of this!

What is end-user data along with networking headers and trailers transmitted through a network?
Typically a "packet" is the wrong answer as it does not on it's own have a trailer as you said. But a packet travels inside a frame, and the frame provides the trailer. I would agree, and say that "packets" themselves do not have a trailer, and therefore say that frame is the right answer.

[edit]

After reviewing the question a little more it says the term refers to "end user data" along with "networking headers, and trailers" that is transmitted through a network. So if the term refers alone to the end user data itself (and not to what it accompanies) then it's a packet. If the term refers to the end user data AND the headers and trailers that are being transmitted then it's a frame. It might just be one of those poor word choice questions or one designed to tick you off and trick you.

New metal networking site?

Hey guys...

I just set up a brand new Metal networking site here:

www.irishmetal.org

It is aimed at promoting Metal in Ireland and networking fans and musicians.

We will soon have lots of resources, like Reviews, Venue and Band details etc. and the FORUM is active, and will probably be our main feature.

Can you guys check it out, and leave suggestions/comments etc.

Cheers!

Michael.

Still having problems with this wireless networking.?

This is really just a continuation of my first question but you don't have to read it too understand this one. Well I'm trying to connect two different brands of wireless networking together. Specifically, the two things I am trying to connect are a TP-Link wireless USB adapter and a Netgear wireless router. Someone has already told me to uninstall the software that came with the TP-Link and just use Windows to connect them because that software is the cause of all the problems. So I did and now it looks less complicated. It actually finds the network name (which is 360toPC) and make an attempt to connect to it. But when it's trying to connect, a pop-up says, " Please wait while windows connects to the '360toPC' network ............ Waiting for network." After that, the pop up just dissapears and on the taskbar it will say, "unable to connect 360toPC. ......."

Will they only connect if they are the same brand? or Does anyone have a solution?

I want to build networking in cable wire so, which is networking device is reqired?
A router, or switch. A lot of routers now have a switch built in. I would look into purchasing one that has both. It will say something like "4 port router/switch".
Reply:Study English so you can pose a question people can understand and possibly, answer.

Newbie Wireless Networking Question?

I'm a newbie to networking but not to computers in general. I just bought a laptop w/ Win Vista that is wireless capable. I also own an older computer with Win ME (yes, it's a dinosaur). I have a cable modem currently hooked to that computer and I just bought a Netgear wireless router. My thought was that I'd keep the old computer hard wired to the modem and use the wireless for my new laptop. But will that work? Clearly I'll have to unhook the cable modem and run it through the router. Will I be able to also hook the PC to the router to continue having an internet connection on it? Will I wind up needing any special networking cards for the PC? It's just all new to me and I'd appreciate anyone who can help me think this through. Thanks!

Newbie Wireless Networking Question?
if the wireless router also has LAN connections this will be easy. If not, take it back and get one that comes with it rather than getting a wireless card for the old WinME system.

Unplug the network cable from the cable modem and plug that into port 1,2,3,4 of the router. Next, plug the network cable that came with the wireless router into the WAN of the router and into the cable modem. WinME is now connected. You will now want to log into the router to protect your wireless network. steps can be found at this website
Reply:I think you are fine. The router usually has at least 4 ports for your wired connections.

You may have a problem networking Vista and ME to each other but not browsing the web from each.
Reply:No, with your router as you planned, everything will work as you stated. The wireless setup can be done by either the CD came with your router or the network setup software came with Vista.
Reply:Does your new router have ether net ports on back? If so u can still have your desktop pc wired and new laptop wireless.what u are trying to do is add a new gateway(router) to your network. When u plug the wire into the router from ur pc make sure that you have your network settings to auto detect. the router will give your desktop pc a new private ip address.Your cable/dsl modem will have your isp's ip address. Hope this was helpful to you.
Reply:Yup not a problem. you can have several wireless, and wired computers all at once. Be sure to follow the instructions to configure your router from the wired computer. it will ask you to enter an IP address like 192.168.0.1 or something very similar to that, and that will bring up the routers internal security page. if you dont put it on an encrypted connection anyone can connect to your network and intercept your signals!!! good luck
Reply:The router should come with some prtty comprehensive instructions, so follow those if possible. Yes, it will work. Just hook the PC to the router and it'll all be good. Unless the PC is REALLY old, you shouldn't need networking cards or anything. You'll get it, it's quite simple really. If you need very specific help, please ask.
Reply:Yes you can have the ME machine hard wired to the router, (as long as their are ports available) and your Vista machine should locate the Wireless hub (as long as the wireless find is turned on). You won't need any networking cards for the ME machine, unless you wanted to make that machine wireless too, and add a Wireless card/antenna.

WEP Code (Networking)?

Hello

I am trying to find the WEP code of the network so that I can connect a laptop to it wirelessly.

I am currently on a desktop with a wired connection.

PLEASE NOTE : I do not have admin for the networking cp (long story).

I heard about a program called "aircrack" but I am not sure if it is of use in my situation.

THANKS DUDESSS

WEP Code (Networking)?
to extend on what georgiaboy17 says, without resetting it you could instead plug the laptop directly into the back of the router using the ethernet cable that came with the router. this bypasses the wep security because you're now using a wired connection not a wireless one - you can then access the admin page of the router, and in some makes/models the wep key is visible and unencrypted within this page.

if you're unable to do either the above or what georgiaboy17 suggests, it's doubtful you are the owner of the router - unless your friend has suspiciously died taking the password to his grave, or one of the other stories we hear frequently in questions of a similar nature here at yahoo! answers.

resetting a router and re-configuring port forwarding is a synch, this website guides you through the exact steps for hundreds of models of router and hundreds of pieces of software so that's actually a viable option:

http://www.portforward.com/english/route...

what i will tell you is that wireless network cards that come installed in laptops are rarely impressive and to monitor network traffic in windows you need to own a card that can be placed into promiscuous mode, which very few do - this means in short you'd be wasting your time trying to get any wep cracking software to actually capture packets unless you're 100% sure your card supports promiscuous mode:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircrack

if you own the router, attempting to crack the wep code is a bizarre way of gaining legitimate access to it but google will return plenty of tutorials for using aircrack - you just have to look.
Reply:If it is your Access Point, just reset it, and set it up again. If it is not yours, cracking the WEP code is illegal.
Reply:Well it is very hard to crack a wep although not impossible.

You'll need two laptops with the same wireless card and a lot of hard work

Can't you start in safe mode (F8 during boot) log on as administrator and change your user name to an administrator and then reset the WEP?

I'm trying to do more networking professionally. Do you recommend any non-traditional groups to join?

I'm a Retirement Advisor. I help people plan for and invest in their present/future retirement needs (same thing as a Financial Advisor except I like to focus on investments geared towards retirement).

I've tried a few different networking groups and have not had much success with them. I've also played the religion card and attempted to join an organization that is through my religion. This approach has turned out to be more religious dating than actual business networking.

I'm extremely interested in networking; however, I can't seem to find the right place to do it. While I'm not the greatest networker, I am more than comfortable to do public speaking engagements, presentations, strike-up conversations, etc. I just can't seem to find the right place to do all this.

I'm wondering if anyone has any non-traditional ideas/approaches to networking (for an advisor). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's a web site called Linked In that might be useful.

Is computer networking a good carreer?

i am going back to school to finish my AA in computer networking. i am graduating this summer. i have been out of the game for a few years, just wordering if computer networking continue to be a rewording carrier.

i will also like to know if they are oportunities out there for entry level technicians with associate degree.

is the pay good for entry level technicians?

were is the industry going in the future?

is it a good idea to pursue a carreer in computer networkingg??

thanks!

Is computer networking a good carreer?
i'm working on my aas in computer network administration / support... you need to get some certifications to go with your aas. I have a part time job doing user support and network admin stuff but they don't pay me enough and its a really small office, and alot of things i need to do i cant do during the day so they go un-done.

my primary is cisco but i'm moving over to more 2003 server stuff, taking my 70-290 test in a couple weeks.

i think the jobs are out there but alot of them are looking for people with 3-5 years experience, bachelors degrees... etc.
Reply:Networking is good. You might want to look into getting certifications along with that degree.
Reply:I think it would be, as well as programming.

Spelling would be something to look at:)
Reply:YES!!! I've worked in the IT industry for over 30 years now. I now work on the business consultancy side, but it's provided me with a good living. But a couple of things. If you're going on the technical side of things, try to get stuff like Microsoft accreditation. I think you can get similar from Cisco Systems, you want to make sure you have these 'certifications' from the 'big boys'. I've met lots of people who work in networking for some pretty big companies (I'm talking multi-national pharmaceuticals in this instance). IT people are ten a penny but you do meet some who stand out from the rest with their expertise. These ones are worth their weight in gold! Make sure you become one of these!
