This is my second networking class, and I find all the concepts in my book intrigueing, but at the same time boring. It is boring, because I do not understand half of what is being stated in the book. Most of it is calculus algorithms, or boring abbreviations, that most likely I'll never encounter. BTW, I barely passed algebra 2, so......yeah...talk about confusing! I'm getting an A in the class, but I'm not learning the very indepth junk. That just means I'm good at paraphrasing the book and other sources. There is a lot to networking. Reminds me of taking electrical engineering! It makes me wonder how much of this stuff I'll ever really encounter.
Did you find networking classes to be boring, even though you are interested in being an Network Admin someday
I am an admin now. I only found the classes boring when I knew the material already. I originally was self-taught since I took chemistry in college. I made the change slowly and mostly learned on my own.
When I decided I wanted to do it full time, I started classes at a community college. I found that I often knew as much as the instructor, and that I had more practical experience. It really sucks sitting in a class where they are not able to teach you anything. I ended up getting enough experience that I got the job I wanted and didn't finish. I concentrated on getting certifications.
If you are in a class and doing well and enjoy the concepts, you will be fine. You are right that you really don't do much math when you are actually working. I haven't set a subnet up in years and there are plenty of calculators that do the math for you. And I spent the last two years consulting where you get a little of everything and do networks from scratch all the time. I still haven't had it come up. Calculus - I had a bunch of it and occasionally used it in chemistry, but I can't even think of what I might use it for now.
Reply:well your question would have been like this " i find networking classes boring because i dont want to be a network administrator."
isnt' that stupid.
Where ever you apply your intrests your mind is all absorbed into the particual subject. maybe you not truly intrested in being a Net Admin
Reply:It sure is,, but I wish I was taking your class. My class, Cisco ccna semister 3, has no calculus algorithms. (And I have not seen ne in the first or second semester.) BUt, fo sho its still really boring. Configering a router is kinda fun. BUt reading about configuring it really is not that great.
