Are networking letters only for those interested in getting a job in the immediate future?

I'm interested in developing contacts in a few different industries and areas of the country but do not need a job in these places in the immediate future. Should I continue looking into networking letters.

They would be more like student networking letters, even though I graduated a year and a half ago.

Networking is great at ANY point as long as you keep up the relationship.

It's great to use for immediate jobs, but it's also good to 1) learn from other professionals in your field and 2) keep doors open.
