Wireless networking - How safe is it?

iam really concerned if some one hacks into my network and access my data. i have very confidential data.

Wireless networking - How safe is it?
In truth wireless is as secure as you make it! If this is YOUR system and you use WPA or even better WPA2 then it can be very secure. Setup incorrectly, it is very insecure!

Setup a system, setup WPA2 encryption (you need all adapter cards and router that supports that) and you are in good shape.

Use a REAL password, not something easy, not something quick for your WPA code! *same applies to router password!

My trick is I make a sentence like "The dog, Fido, bit the man 2 times in 3 days." then use the first letters and all numbers

TdFbtm2ti3d it won't be cracked easily and you can remember it! Secure passwords, secure encryption= secure system. (You can also get good monitoring software which will alert you to any thing odd!) If you use that with MAC filters at the router you have a highly secure system!

Wifi can be weak or strong, its all in how its setup!

If your really want secure, use a RADIUS system with rotating keys and WPA2! (overkill for most everyone) This takes help to setup and get working! Radius needs username and password as well as correct keys to even get an IP, all sent encrypted!

All that being said, the wired units will still be FASTER and have less "issues" on the system!
Reply:My friend at Yahoo! advises against wireless networks while there is a wired choice. He says it is safer to use wired networks these days. The future is to be brighter for wireless networks, however, says he.
Reply:Well, networks can always be hacked. Its just easier to hack wireless since anyone can catch your wireless waves. This was not a problem in ethernet since it is wired, and one needs physical access.

Wireless Adhoc networks use no encryption, so easily sniffed.

WEP is also easily cracked.

Right now the best bet would be to use a combination of

WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]

And use a shared key, while I won't guarantee that this cannot be hacked, but the chances are too less. And this is used commercially.

I would also suggest you to use SSL/SSH whenever you transfer encrypted data elsewhere over wireless.
Reply:ANy Connection Can Be Hacked Into. And It Makes It That Much Easier If Your File And Printer Sharing is open. But It All Depend s On How You Have It Set Up. Like Passwords And Protections Like Internet Security Software And What Not. if You DFont Know How To Set It Up To The Fullest Then I Would Suggest Haveing Someone That Does Come Do It. Or Call You Internet Provide And Ask Them To Help You Set It up
