Networking with linux ubuntu help!?

Ok Im kinda new at the whole networking thing so if anyone could, could you give me step by step instructions (pictures are very helpful) on how to set up my network for linux. I have verizon online on my windows computer, and I just installed ubuntu on another computer. I have my internet going in to a linksys router and out to both computers. My internet works fine on my windows system, but I dont know how to set it up on my linux ubuntu machine... Ive tried to read some guides, but I dont know where to get the numbers or if I have a static ip or a DNS i just want my linux computer to be a part of my windows workgroup mshome and I want it connected to the internet. So I need an explanation of how to do it and where to get all of the ip adresses and numbers and things and how to get them! Any help is greatly appreicated thank you!

Here is what I would recommend. Turn on your windows machine. Call the Verizon tech support and just complain that the CD provided is scratched. Then they will instruct you how to manually log into the router/modem and their online website to activate the account. After all, turn on your Ubuntu linux and configure the DNS on the small 2 computers next to the clock. You can use the Verizon DNS server configured on you DSL moden, or use another ( 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) DNS server on your Ubuntu Linux.
